Biography

Bruce S. Bauer, MD, FACS, FAAP, formerly Head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Children’s Memorial Hospital and Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School, has recently joined NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery as Director of Pediatric Plastic Surgery. He has joined the faculty of University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, as Clinical Professor of Surgery. Dr. Bauer received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and also completed both his General Surgery and Plastic Surgery training there. He was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1980 and is both a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Sub Specialty Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Bauer started his career at Children’s Memorial Hospital in 1979 as a full time specialist in Pediatric Plastic Surgery and became Chief of the service in 1986 and continued in that role until May of 2009 when his practice moved to NorthShore. He specializes in cleft lip and palate, craniofacial deformities, congenital and acquired ear deformities, and the reconstruction of birthmarks, both vascular and pigmented. He has a particular interest in treatment of large and giant pigmented nevus and pediatric tissue expansion for treatment of these patients and in the treatment of other congenital and acquired deformities. He is recognized for having the largest surgical experience in the treatment of giant nevi in the world. While his focus is pediatric plastic surgery, the expertise gained in this field lends itself to the secondary treatment of both congenital and acquired deformities of the ear in adult patients, and the treatment of late deformities secondary to vascular malformations and cleft lip and palate.

In addition to his work at NorthShore, Dr. Bauer is active in numerous professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgery, American Association of Plastic Surgery and American & Internal Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Associations. He was President of the American Association of Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics for 2005 – 2006 and was on the Executive Board of this organization until 2008.

He is on the advisory board of Nevus Outreach, Inc. the primary support organization for children and adults born with large and giant pigmented nevi.

He has authored or co-authored numerous papers and chapters related to his field, and most recently he has co-edited and contributed extensively to Principles and Practice of Pediatric Plastic Surgery with Drs. Michael Bentz and Ronald Zuker, published by Quality Medical Publishing in 2008, a book that is the recognized as the definitive text in the field.
